Emotional intelligence, based on which the nature of emotional issues in midwifery practice is perceived and understood, is gaining recognition for its contribution to improving the care provided for pregnant women. The term emotional intelligence refers to the ability to recognize and distinguish emotions, in both oneself and other individuals, enabling emotional issues to be managed more effectively. At the level of health care services, emotional intelligence can have a significant impact and plays a decisive role in the care provided, and in particular in the decisionmaking process and in the ways health care providers act. The approach to healthcare midwifery practice based on emotional intelligence is linked to the way health services are implemented, determining the effectiveness of the care provided, the outcome of the patients' health and their satisfaction with the health care providers. The potential contribution of emotional intelligence to midwifery practice necessitates further exploration of its benefits and ways of integrating it in midwifery education.
