The knowledge of health scientists about nutritional issues

OBJECTIVE The assessment of basic nutritional knowledge of a sample of doctors, nurses and students of health science.

METHOD A nutrition questionnaire consisting of 7 questions was completed by 255 health science students and health professionals. Descriptive statistics was performed using SPSS 13.0, the accuracy of the answers was recorded and the x2 test was used for proportion comparisons between groups. Statistical significance was set at p=0.05.

RESULTS The mean accuracy of the responses was below 50%. Statistically significant differences were noted between subgroups in three questions, with doctors answering correctly in the highest percentage and nursing students in the lowest.

CONCLUSIONS The knowledge of health care workers and students about nutrition is deficient. Redesign of the educational curriculum and clinical practice is necessary to address this problem.
