Acute renal failure as the initial presentation
in a patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung

Squamous cell carcinoma of the lung presenting with acute renal failure (ARF) is a very rare condition. The case is presented of a 64 year-old man, a heavy smoker who had normal renal function as assessed by blood tests one year earlier, who was admitted complaining of vomiting and oliguria. The laboratory and imaging examinations showed acute renal failure with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung and hyperglobulinemia as a paraneoplastic sydrome. The increased κ and λ light chains could have played a crucial role in the development of ARF due to fibrillary glomerulopathy.
