Gabapentin is a new antiepileptic drug which is used mainly as an adjunctive medicine in the treatment of refractory acute mania. It is not metabolized by the liver but is excreted unchanged in the urine, so it has no effects on the hepatic enzymes. We present the case of a patient with bipolar disorder and hepatic dysfunction caused by HCV infection, in the treatment of whom the specific pharmacokinetic properties of gabapentin proved useful.

Key words: Bipolar disorder, Gabapentin, HCV infection.
