Tongue cancer is the most common type of oral cancer. The "gold standard" treatment for the tongue cancer is surgical treatment (glossectomy). The term "glossectomy" is used to describe a variety of surgical procedures for the resection of tongue tumors. The lack of a widely accepted classification system for the types of glossectomy in international literature causes confusion, as the boundaries of the part of the tongue that is removed and which remains are not clearly defined. Also, the surgical centers around the world don't use the same terms to describe the same surgical procedures. The use of different terms to describe the same operation in international literature causes difficulty in developing an algorithm of reconstruction based on the size and location of the surgical deficit, as well as in drawing conclusions regarding the comparison of functionality and quality of life of patients. Therefore, there is a necessity to develop a commonly accepted classification system for the types of glossectomy, with the aim of better communication between surgeons, the possibility of multi-center studies between different countries and the creation of treatment and reconstruction guidelines.

Key words: Classification, Glossectomy, Tongue cancer.
