The genetics and epigenetic "ties" of mesothelioma: A narrative mini-review

Mesothelioma constitutes the prototype of cancer developing as a consequence of occupational exposure. Given that the major part of the causality of the disease lies in the interaction between genetic and environmental factors, with epigenetic modifications acting as the main molecular link, the "genetic" and "epigenetic" components of mesothelioma, and the underlying cellular hallmarks should not be underestimated. Providing specific details, we highlight the fact that, although mesothelioma is perceived as an environmentally-induced cancer, genetic alterations and epigenetic modifications are clearly involved in its development, which may pave the way for novel therapies. New studies should focus on the early diagnosis of mesothelioma after screening of high-risk groups (members of which should definitely be advised on smoking cessation), and also on development of the so-called "liquid biopsy" studies.
